    Barbarism
My neighbor spent part of his childhood in another land.  He tutored English.  He says the family gave him the status of  "First Son" - a great honor - and the the rest of the sons moved down a notch.  He was treated like royalty inside that home.  But outside was a different story.

Life was cheap, he says, and he has pictures of executions.

Homes were crowded.  Boys were more valuable as workers in the fields than girls.  And if a family had an baby that could not be supported it was rolled up in a grass mat and put outside at night to freeze.  There was a truck that came daily and collected up the little grass mat packages.  He never found out what happened to them.

I write this out of a desire to record such awfulness.  Why?  Lest it be forgotten.  Lest we again slip into that barbarism.

    Bees Buzz
I went out into my back yard to discover a swarm of bees clustering on the end of one of the rafters.  Obviously the queen was in the middle somewhere, not to be seen.

The neighbor reassured me that they were simply looking for a suitable location and would be gone in a day or so.  Not that I objected to the bees being there, but you know how neighbors can be, and then there is our cat who can be fascinated with moving things.

A week later the bees were still there.

Should I be worried?  Bee services (not free) were recommended.  So I posted a listing on Craigslist: "Swarm of bees looking for new home!"

Well, a friendly beekeeper did contact me.  She was interested but she was on the other side of town.  She spread the word.  Just when I was starting to receive plugs for how fun it is to keep bees and local beekeepers were homing in for the prize - the bees left!

That was the day before yesterday.  All that was left was a miserable handful of confused bees, stragglers left on the rafter.  And today they too were gone.  Did the hive send messengers to get them?

I am pleased the bees have moved on.  At the same time I feel a small sadness.

    I love bees.

    STRUCK

My son has an entry in this year's Cannes Film Festival short film category.

They are judging it by votes on YouTube.

    My Son got Married
In a fairytale ceremony at the Scientology Celerity Centre in Hollywood my son the movie director wed the 24 actress this last weekend.

It was clearly a "celebrity" event.  You and I might not recognize all the lesser stars, but Hollywood does.  Security was tight!  I had my big camera there and my daughter had to assure security that I was the groom's father.

Beautiful wedding, beautiful couple, I wish them happiness ever after.

    Flock... to the new browser
Just got the new Flock browser.  Wow!

It automatically connects to LiveJournal, Flickr, del.icio.us, Facebook, etc. and lists contacts in left bar.  For flickr I get a list of contacts' latest pictures and can open a "media bar" at the top where I can scroll left/right on any photo stream.  Wow!

    I could get addicted.

    What they want to hear
I'm going to start out on a philosophical note to set a tone and direction.

Have you ever noticed how people hear what they want to hear?  Relatively speaking.  I was watching a presidential candidate debate and the question was presented, "Would you go to war without Congress approval?"

One candidate said, "Of course I would go to Congress.  Read the Constitution - you can't go to war without a declaration of war!"  This was greeted by a loud silence.

Another candidate responded to the same question with, "I think our military has done a fantastic job!"  This was greeted with applause.

So, the second did not even answer the question, but said something which the people there wanted to hear.  That is called politics, I believe.  The first candidate spoke an uncomfortable truth.  The veracity of the second's statement was questionable if only from the statistics in a recent campaign.  But the audience vote was clear.

Do people not want to hear the truth?  And if not, why?
